Calling Ladysmith Black Mambazo a choir does not do justice to their status. It is rather a cultural institution. They conquer the hearts of the audience with their uplifting vocal harmonies and distinctive dance. In 1960, Joseph Shabalala founded the singing group and soon they became one of the most successful singing groups in South Africa. They won many talent shows and were excluded from further participation due to their perfect harmonies. The big breakthrough followed in 1986 when Paul Simon incorporated the rich harmonies on his famous Graceland album. Over the years, the original members have welcomed a new younger generation into their mission with a deep respect for their rich cultural and personal history. Together they spread the message of "Peace, love and harmony". They have been Grammy-nominated for more than 19 times and have won five times.
