Martha: A Picture Story (première)

NL: In de  jaren 70 van de vorige eeuw bevond de graffitiscene van New York zich op een cruciaal moment. Terwijl het stadsbestuur zijn uiterste best deed graffiti de kop in te drukken, werden de writers langzaam door steeds meer mensen gezien als helden in plaats van paria.

Martha Cooper (1943) legde al sinds die vroege dagen de graffiti- en street art wereld vast op de gevoelige plaat. Door haar beelden kon een breed publiek kennis maken met deze kunst, kunstenaars en hun proces, wat zonder meer heeft bijgedragen aan de waardering ervoor. De documentaire Martha: a picture story biedt een prachtig inkijkje in het leven van deze bijzondere vrouw.

In 1970s New York, photographer Martha Cooper captured some of the first images of graffiti at a time when the city had declared war on it. Decades later, Cooper has become influential to the global movement of street artists.

Her images allowed a wide audience to learn about this art, artists and their process. This undoubtedly contributed to its appreciation. The documentary "Martha: A Picture Story" offers a wonderful insight into the life of this extraordinary woman.
