Jennie Livingston heeft met dit intrigerende portret van de ballroom cultuur in het New York van de jaren 80 een ode gebracht aan zelf-expressie en authenticiteit in de queer scene. De balls zijn niet alleen een manier om jezelf te uiten, maar ook een bron van solidariteit en het vinden van familie. Intiem en hartverwarmend, waarin flamboyante buitenstaanders zichzelf durven zijn en hiermee hun stempel drukken op de wereld, die jaren later nog steeds voelbaar is.

An iconic documentary about the African-American and Latin American ballroom scene: how trans women, drag queens and voguers have shaped pop culture. Following the screening, there will be an (online) Q&A with director Jennie Livingston.
With this intriguing portrait of ballroom culture in 1980s New York, Jennie Livingston has paid tribute to self-expression and authenticity within the queer scene. She captures the so-called ‘balls’, where LGBTQIA+ performers, predominantly from African and Latin American backgrounds, forge their identities within a unique community of their own. The performers talk about how they are systematically marginalised and have to contend with racism, poverty, homophobia and transphobia. The balls are not only a way to express oneself, but also a source of solidarity and a means of finding family. An intimate and heart-warming film in which flamboyant outsiders dare to be themselves and, in doing so, leave their mark on the world – an impact that can still be felt years later.
