L.A.V.A. brengt de werelden van Greco & Scholten en Roberto Zappalà samen in een krachtige dansvoorstelling. Wat begint als verschil en frictie, groeit uit tot nieuwe vormen van beweging. Rauw en onvoorspelbaar, maar tegelijk traag en gecontroleerd—zoals lava dat onder de oppervlakte borrelt.
De dansers verkennen hoe spanning en contrast kunnen leiden tot energie en vernieuwing. In een samenspel van beweging en geluid ontstaat een intens geheel, waarin kracht en kwetsbaarheid naast elkaar bestaan. L.A.V.A. laat zien hoe uit wrijving iets nieuws kan ontstaan.

Emio Greco (Italië) en Pieter C. Scholten (Nederland) werken sinds 1995 samen en hebben in meer dan drie decennia een veelzijdig en internationaal erkend oeuvre opgebouwd dat zich uitstrekt van hedendaagse dans tot opera, theater, muziek en film. Sinds 1996 maakt het choreografenduo intens fysieke dansvoorstellingen waarin het intuïtieve, nieuwsgierige lichaam centraal staat — een lichaam in opstand ook, dat zich niet laat voegen naar opgelegde dansvormen, maar zichzelf tot maat verheft in haar beweging door tijd, ruimte en vorm. Met dit compromisloze vertrekpunt ontwikkelde het gezelschap een eigenzinnig bewegingsvocabulaire, dat al vroeg werd vastgelegd in hun artistieke manifest Les Sept Nécessités (1996). Voor hun uitzonderlijke bijdrage aan de Nederlandse dans ontvingen Greco en Scholten in 2021 de VSCD Gouden Zwaan oever prijs.

Roberto Zappalà is artistiek directeur en choreograaf van het gelijknamige Zappalà Danza Company, dat hij in 1990 op Sicilië oprichtte. Voor dit gezelschap creëerde hij meer dan 85 werken, waaronder de veelbekroonde producties A.semu tutti devoti tutti? en La Nona. Hij ontwikkelde een eigen choreografische taal, MoDem genaamd, en schreef het boek Omnia Corporas over zijn methode. Zappalà richtte tevens Scenario Pubblico op, het eerste internationale choreografische centrum van Italië. Voor zijn oeuvre ontving hij in 2024 een Lifetime Achievement Award.

L.A.V.A. brings together the worlds of Greco & Scholten and Roberto Zappalà in a powerful dance production. What begins as difference and friction grows into new forms of movement. Raw and unpredictable, yet simultaneously slow and controlled — like lava simmering beneath the surface.
The dancers explore how tension and contrast can give rise to energy and renewal. In an interplay of movement and sound, an intense whole emerges in which strength and vulnerability exist side by side. L.A.V.A. shows how friction can be the source of something new.

Emio Greco (Italy) and Pieter C. Scholten (the Netherlands) have worked together since 1995, building over more than three decades a wide-ranging and internationally recognised body of work spanning contemporary dance, opera, theatre, music and film. Since 1996, the choreographic duo has created intensely physical dance productions centred on the intuitive, curious body — a body in revolt, too, that refuses to be shaped by imposed dance forms but sets its own measure in its movement through time, space and form. From this uncompromising starting point, the company developed a distinctive movement vocabulary, articulated early on in their artistic manifesto Les Sept Nécessités (1996). In recognition of their exceptional contribution to Dutch dance, Greco and Scholten received the VSCD Golden Swan Award in 2021.
about Roberto Zappalà
Roberto Zappalà is artistic director and choreographer of the eponymous Zappalà Danza Company, which he founded in Sicily in 1990.
