Storm - Music by Shabaka Hutchings
De Britse multi-instrumentalist Shabaka Hutchings is als componist bij het project betrokken. Samen met OFFprojects choreograaf Amos Ben-Tal putten de twee makers inspiratie uit het minimalisme van componisten als Terry Riley en de op patronen gebaseerde muziek van Zuid-Oeganda.
Zowel de dansers als jazzmusici bewegen zich tussen vaste frasen en geïmproviseerde verkenning, waardoor elke voorstelling anders is. Want de mooiste dingen gebeuren toch meestal in het onverwachte? Maak je klaar voor een wervelwind van jazz en dans, chaos en harmonie, virtuositeit en tederheid. Het wordt een bijzondere avond voor zowel muziek als dansliefhebbers.

OFFprojects
Dit Haagse dansgezelschap bestaat uit voormalige dansers van gerenommeerde gezelschappen zoals NDT, Batsheva en Hofesh Shechter Company. Onder leiding van choreograaf en musicus Amos Ben-Tal heeft OFFprojects diverse voorstellingen gecreëerd waarin live compositie op innovatieve en diepgaande wijze is geïntegreerd. Het collectief staat bekend om hun out of the box-benadering van dans, adembenemende dansers en spannende interdisciplinaire samenwerkingen, waarbij ze de grenzen van interdisciplinariteit opzoeken en benaderingen van improvisatie verleggen. Interval werd genomineerd voor de prestigieuze dansprijs de Zwaan voor meest indrukwekkende dansproductie en PART werd door de pers benoemd tot een van de beste voorstellingen in 2022.
Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw
Het Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw (JOC) bestaat uit Nederlandse jazzmusici van wereldklasse. Het JOC draagt de naam van het Koninklijk Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, de enige concertzaal ter wereld die naast een klassiek orkest ook een jazzorkest aan haar naam heeft verbonden. De bigband behoort tot de top van Europa, won meerdere Edison Awards en werkte eerder samen met jazzlegendes als Chick Corea, Dr. Lonnie Smith en Joshua Redman. Naast dat het orkest meer dan een eeuw Nederlandse jazz toegankelijk wil maken voor nieuwe generaties, kijkt het ook graag vooruit en werkt samen met hedendaagse (jazz)musici uit alle windstreken.
Shabaka Hutchings
Als centrale figuur van de Londense jazz-renaissance neemt Shabaka Hutchings afstand van het strikte “jazz”-etiket en haalt hij inspiratie uit vele bronnen: van calypso en hiphop tot zijn klassieke opleiding in Londen. Na zijn invloedrijke ensembles The Comet is Coming, Sons of Kemet en Shabaka and the Ancestors sloeg hij in 2023 een nieuwe weg in door zich voornamelijk te focussen op fluit. Voor zijn recentste werk Perceive its Beauty, Acknowledge its Grace liet hij zich inspireren door spiritual jazz en de traditionele muziek van Barbados.

Together with OFFprojects choreographer Amos Ben-Tal, the two creators draw inspiration from the minimalism of Terry Riley and the pattern-based music of southern Uganda. In this performance, both the dancers and jazz musicians move between fixed phrases and improvised exploration, therefore every performance is different. After all, the most beautiful things usually happen when you least expect them, don't they? Get ready for a whirlwind of jazz and contemporary dance, harmony and chaos, virtuosity and tenderness. It will be a special evening for both music and dance lovers.

Since its inception, the genre jazz has been inextricably linked to dance. Jazz was the dance music of the early 20th century: lively, rhythmic, and meant to move. OFFprojects is a dance company based in The Hague, consisting of former dancers from renowned companies such as NDT, Batsheva, and Hofesh Shechter Company. Led by choreographer and musician Amos Ben-Tal, OFFprojects has created various performances in which live composition is integrated in an innovative and profound way. The collective is known for its out-of-the-box approach to dance, breathtaking dancers, and exciting interdisciplinary collaborations, pushing the boundaries of interdisciplinarity and shifting approaches to improvisation. Interval was nominated for the prestigious Zwaan Award for most impressive dance production, and PART was named one of the best performances of 2022 by the press.
As a central figure in London's jazz renaissance, Shabaka Hutchings distances himself from the strict “jazz” label and draws inspiration from many sources, from calypso and hip-hop beats to his classical training in London. After leading many influential ensembles such as The Comet is Coming, Sons of Kemet and Shabaka and the Ancestors he embarked on a new path in 2023, focusing primarily on flute. His most recent work, "Perceive its Beauty, Acknowledge its Grace," was inspired by spiritual jazz and traditional Barbadian music.
The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw consists of world-class Dutch jazz musicians. The JOC bears the name of the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the only concert hall in the world that, in addition to a classical orchestra, also has a jazz orchestra attached to its name. The big band is among the best of Europe, has won several prestigious Edison Awards and has previously collaborated with jazz legends such as Chick Corea, Dr. Lonnie Smith and Joshua Redman. Besides making more than a century of Dutch jazz accessible to new generations, the orchestra also looks ahead and collaborates with contemporary (jazz) musicians from all over the world.
