Met haar 25 dansers zet Linning de naïef-romantische verbeelding van de zee uit Debussy’s tijd tegenover de harde realiteit van nu, gevormd door stijgende zeespiegels en vervuiling. La Mer nodigt uit tot reflectie over ons eigen handelen. Het resultaat is een meeslepende hybride van dans, muziek, couture en videokunst die zowel fysiek als intellectueel raakt.

De cinematografische muziek van Yannis Kyriakides biedt een eigentijdse tegenhanger voor Debussy’s symfonie. Zijn geluidscomposities zijn geschreven voor de fenomenale sopraan Barbara Hannigan. De digitale scenografie van mediakunstenaar Heleen Blanken en meer dan tachtig duurzame kostuums van de Japanse haute-couture ontwerper Yuima Nakazato transformeren het toneel tot een mysterieuze, vloeiende wereld waarin schoonheid en dreiging hand in hand gaan.

This visually rich and emotionally charged multimedia production explores the beauty and fragility of our oceans. This new work by Nanine Linning is based on Claude Debussy's monumental and iconic La Mer (1905).
With her 25 dancers, Linning sets the naively romantic vision of the sea from Debussy's era against the harsh reality of today, shaped by rising sea levels and pollution. La Mer invites reflection on our own actions. The result is a sweeping hybrid of dance, music, couture and video art that resonates as much intellectually as it does physically.

The cinematic score by Yannis Kyriakides offers a contemporary counterpart to Debussy's symphony. His sound compositions are written for the phenomenal soprano Barbara Hannigan. The digital scenography by media artist Heleen Blanken and more than eighty sustainable costumes by Japanese haute-couture designer Yuima Nakazato transform the stage into a mysterious, fluid world in which beauty and menace go hand in hand.
