Deze zomer tovert Sunset Cinema elf bijzondere plekken om tot openluchtbioscopen. Bij de Asterdhoeve vertonen we Balomania, in samenwerking met Blind Walls. Een fascinerend en meeslepend portret van de Braziliaanse ‘ballonmaffia’: geheime bendes die gigantische heteluchtballonnen maken en najagen.

In de Braziliaanse favela’s bouwen gepassioneerde ballonmakers gigantische heteluchtballonnen, soms wel 70 meter hoog, die illegaal én spectaculair de lucht in gaan, compleet met vuurwerk.

Balomania is het indrukwekkende resultaat van een tien jaar durend proces. Regisseur Sissel Morell Dargis kreeg uitzonderlijke toegang tot deze verborgen wereld en volgt legendarische makers als Jabá en ballonjagers zoals Ton. Van dichtbij ontdekt ze de risico’s, obsessie en kameraadschap achter deze adembenemende creaties.

Laat je meevoeren naar een hallucinerende en intieme wereld vol verbeeldingskracht, tegen de achtergrond van sociale ongelijkheid en politieke onrust.

Balomania was winnaar van de Publieksprijs van Blind Walls Film Fest 2026.

In augustus en september 2026 vertonen we veertien avonden lang tijdens Sunset Cinema de mooiste films op elf unieke buitenlocaties in de stad. Van het voetbalstadion tot een prachtig landgoed: elke plek krijgt een magisch filmisch tintje zodra de zon ondergaat. In Balomania, a secret brotherhood of giant hot air balloon makers in Brazil risks everything to create and launch their illegal masterpieces.

In the Brazilian favelas, passionate balloon makers build gigantic hot air balloons, some reaching heights of up to 70 meters, which rise illegally and spectacularly into the sky alongside dazzling fireworks.
