Stanley Kubrick’s angstaanjagende horror-meesterwerk The Shining, gebaseerd op het gelijknamige boek van Stephen King, keert ter ere van het 45-jarig bestaan terug naar de cinema. De film uit 1980 wordt beschouwd als een van de beste horrorfilms ooit gemaakt.

Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) neemt een baan aan als winterconciërge in het afgelegen Overlook Hotel in Colorado, in de hoop daar van zijn writer's block af te komen. Hij neemt er zijn intrek samen met zijn vrouw Wendy (Shelley Duvall) en zijn zoon Danny (Danny Lloyd), die geplaagd wordt door paranormale visioenen. Maar het schrijven wil niet vorderen en Danny's visioenen worden verontrustender. Intussen ontdekt Jack de duistere geheimen van het hotel en verandert hij langzaam in een moordzuchtige maniak die zijn gezin doodsangsten laat uitstaan.
