Hoe overleef je in een systeem dat je van alle kanten volledig omgeeft en bepalend is voor wat kan, niet kan, wat mag of niet mag? Welk gedrag wordt er van de buitenwereld verwacht, terwijl er van binnen een onstuimige energie kolkt die je tot iets anders drijft? We komen samen en bezinnen op de (huidige staat van de) wereld. Onze (gezamenlijke) wereld volgens jouw (eigen) beeld. Wij willen wel begrijpen wat er speelt, maar we kunnen het ook maar moeilijk aanhoren, en de vele beelden verwarren ons. Concurrentie verpakt als liefde. Empathie verward met zwakte. Autoriteit die zogenaamd beschermd. Verzorging die onderdanigheid eist. Het is een dans; choreografie, improvisatie, het is theater. Dit is werk.
Asset, Liability & Equity is deels een strak en sprankelend vormgegeven, virtuoos uitgevoerde choreografie, maar kan ook een ongemakkelijk gevoel oproepen. In een absurdistisch schouwspel met de intensiteit van een arena creëert de presentator, de MC van de voorstelling, een omgeving waarin dansers en publiek samen de tol voelen van kapitaal, entertainment, status en bevrediging. In deze nieuwe productie daagt Connor Schumacher het publiek uit om meer te zijn dan een voyeur en maakt hen tot een actieve deelnemer van het aanbod.

ARK/Connor Schumacher, opgericht in 2020 door Connor Schumacher, is een Rotterdamse dansorganisatie die sociale choreografie tot leven brengt. Het werk van ARK beweegt mensen, fysiek en mentaal, van de intimiteit van theaters tot de energie van festivals en clubs.
ARK’s verdieping in essentiële soft skills werd gevormd door deelname aan internationale dansonderzoeksprojecten als Empowering Dance en Dancing Museums. Dat leidde tot samenwerkingen met instellingen als Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen en het Louvre.
De filosofie van ARK is geworteld in neurowetenschap en psychologie, en werkt toe naar een sociale danscultuur die weet: Society would be better if we danced everyday.

How do you survive in a system that surrounds you entirely and determines what is possible, what is permitted, what is not? What behaviour does the outside world expect of you, while a turbulent energy churns within, driving you towards something else? We come together and reflect on the world — on its current state. Our shared world according to your own vision. We want to understand what is happening, but we can barely stand to hear it, and the flood of images leaves us confused. Competition dressed up as love. Empathy mistaken for weakness. Authority that claims to protect. Care that demands submission. It is a dance; choreography, improvisation, theatre. This is work.
Asset, Liability & Equity is in part a tightly and brilliantly crafted, virtuosically performed choreography — but it may also leave you unsettled. In an absurdist spectacle with the intensity of an arena, the presenter, the MC of the production, creates an environment in which dancers and audience together feel the toll of capital, entertainment, status and gratification. In this new production, Connor Schumacher challenges the audience to be more than voyeurs and makes them active participants in what is on offer.
