Wong Kar Wai en cameraman Christopher Doyle versmelten de ritmes van Buenos Aires en de jazz van Frank Zappa tot een beeldschoon gefilmde liefdestragedie, die afwisselend wanhopig en uitzinnig romantisch is. Wong nam zijn film op aan de vooravond van de overdracht van Hongkong in 1997, toen de LHBTQIA+-gemeenschap van het land plotseling een onzekere toekomst tegemoet ging. Ho en Lai worden vol intensiteit gespeeld door hartenbrekers Leslie Cheung en Tony Leung, destijds Chinese supersterren. Happy Together won de Best Director Award en was onderdeel van de Gouden Palm-competitie in Cannes.
De film wordt ingeleid door Sky (die/diens), een interdisciplinaire queer maker uit Breda. Van illustraties en installaties tot de Queer Mail Club, een maandelijkse mail vol queer kunst en verhalen. Met diens werk wil Sky queer joy brengen en ruimte maken voor verschillende identiteiten.

A lyrical, intoxicating portrait of a relationship falling apart. Hong Kong superstars Tony Leung and Leslie Cheung play a couple travelling through Argentina, locked in a turbulent cycle of infatuation and destructive jealousy. Wong Kar Wai and cinematographer Christopher Doyle fuse the rhythms of Buenos Aires with the jazz of Frank Zappa into a stunningly filmed tragic love story, by turns desperate and wildly romantic. Wong shot the film on the eve of Hong Kong's 1997 handover, when the country's LGBTQIA+ community was suddenly facing an uncertain future. Ho and Lai are played with great intensity by heartthrobs Leslie Cheung and Tony Leung, Chinese superstars at the time. Happy Together won the Best Director Award and was part of the Palme d'Or competition at Cannes.
The film will be introduced by Sky (they/them), an interdisciplinary queer maker from Breda. From illustrations and installations to the Queer Mail Club, a monthly mailing full of queer art and stories. Through their work, Sky aims to bring queer joy and create space for different identities.
