BUas Movie Club Selection: Jimpa

Jim (Lithgow) calls himself 'Jimpa' to escape the word 'grandpa' — true to form for this charming contrarian, who left his family to pursue a free, gay life in Amsterdam. His daughter Hannah (Olivia Colman), her non-binary teenager Frances, and her husband (Daniel Henshall) pay Jimpa a visit — both exposing and bridging generational divides.

Against the backdrop of the Amsterdam canals, Hannah attempts to make her latest feature film: a tribute to her father. Jimpa, meanwhile, is simply being himself — a right he fought hard for. He encourages Frances to explore queer Amsterdam (with a few familiar Dutch faces along the way, including Romana Vrede, Hans Kesting, and Zoë Love Smith). Between the family members, things do not run entirely smoothly — but then, isn't that just the way of it when everyone is truly being themselves?

Australian filmmaker Sophie Hyde made the intimate tragicomedy Good Luck to You, Leo Grande in 2022. Now she turns her attention to the intimacy of her own life, casting her own child in the film. The honest, sincerely performed Jimpa resonates far beyond the family circle.

Every last Wednesday of the month at Chasse Cinema, we curate films with English subtitles, hosted by Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas) with Chasse. "Because the best movies aren't just watched—they're experienced - together."
