Met FRANK - kort voor Frankenstein - onderzoekt choreograaf Cherish Menzo de figuur van ‘het monster’. Voorbij een louter fysieke of visuele weergave, bestudeert ze ‘het monsterlijke’ als een belichaming van overtuigingen en narratieven die ons beangstigen en doen gruwelen, maar ons ook fascineren. Met FRANK neemt Cherish Menzo je mee in een bevlogen performance die onderzoekt hoe verval en geleidelijke aftakeling iemands bewegingen kunnen beïnvloeden.
Samen met performers Omagbitse Omagbemi, Mulunesh en Malick Cissé creëert ze een ritualistische, apocalyptische en carnavaleske voorstelling. Geconstrueerde identiteiten worden in twijfel getrokken, lichamen wijken zodanig af dat ze ondraaglijk worden en barsten. De dansers vertolken hun plaats in de wereld met onsamenhangende, afgebroken bewegingen terwijl het decor rond hen instort. In een wankele, haperende wereld vol onwaarschijnlijke, gruwelijke en gewelddadige gebeurtenissen roept de voorstelling herinneringen op aan vroege horrorfilms en dat akelige gevoel, die flikkering in het donker.

over Cherish Menzo
Cherish Menzo (1988, Nederland) is choreograaf en danser. Ze woont in Brussel en Amsterdam.
In haar werk kijkt Cherish voornamelijk naar hoe het lichaam zich kan transformeren op scène en hoe verschillende ideeën fysiek “belichaamd” worden. Door middel van vervorming, verval en dissonantie probeert Cherish lichamen los te maken van geforceerde percepties en hun dagelijkse lichamelijke realiteit, waarbij ze de complexiteit en tegenstrijdigheid benadrukt van beelden die op het eerste gezicht herkenbaar lijken. Ze maakt eigen werk sinds 2016.
Cherish ontving de Amsterdam FRINGE Award en de FRINGE International Bursary Award 2019 met JEZEBEL. JEZEBEL werd in 2020 geselecteerd voor zowel het Nederlandse als het Vlaamse Theaterfestival. In 2022 ontving Cherish de prestigieuze Charlotte Köhler prijs van het Prins Bernhard Fonds (Amsterdam). DARKMATTER werd ook geselecteerd voor zowel het Nederlands Theaterfestival als zijn Belgische tegenhanger (2023). Cherish ontving met DARKMATTER de BNG Bank Theaterprijs (2023) en de prijs voor beste regie (2023) van de Nederlandse Toneeljury. Cherish's werk wordt structureel gesteund en geproduceerd door GRIP, waar zij onderdeel van de artistieke kern is.

Malick Cissé is een sterke en opvallende performer en danser met een enorme veelzijdigheid in bewegingspraktijken. In zijn eigen praktijk bestudeert Malick de hybridisatie tussen stijlen als hiphop, hedendaagse dans, krump en breakdance.
over Mulunesh
Mulunesh volgde een dansopleiding in Aurillac en daarna in Toulouse. Haar ontmoeting met Anne Marie Van alias Nach leidde haar naar de KRUMP-cultuur. Terwijl ze rondzwierf in de KRUMP-beweging, ontmoette ze Julien Adjovi alias Wrestler. Ze werkte onder de naam Wrestler X om haar technieken en taal te verfijnen. Mulunesh nam deel aan de creatie Elles disent van de Nach Van Van Dance Company. Ze is ook een performer bij Betty Tchomanga, het FAIRE collectief en Saïdo Lehlouh.

Omagbitse Omagbemi behaalde haar BFA in dans aan de Montclair State University. In 2012 kreeg ze een Bessie voor Sustained Achievement in Performance. Met Punchdrunk International was ze te zien in Sleep No More en The Burnt City. Met Dance On Ensemble was ze te zien in projecten van Lucinda Childs, Daniel Linehan en Meg Stuart.

After the acclaimed performances JEZEBEL and DARKMATTER, choreographer, dancer, and 2023 Regieprijs winner Cherish Menzo returns with FRANK—the third part of this intriguing trilogy. A trilogy not made up of chronological stories or a sequence of events, but rather a triptych of spaces, universes, fictions, and conversations centered on the Black body. It aims to explore the many connections within the African diaspora in recognizable, metaphorical, and abstract ways.
With FRANK—short for Frankenstein—choreographer Cherish Menzo delves into the figure of “the monster.” Beyond a purely physical or visual representation, she studies the monstrous as an embodiment of beliefs and narratives that frighten and horrify us, but also captivate us. In FRANK, Cherish Menzo guides you through a powerful performance that investigates how decay and gradual deterioration can influence one’s movements.
Together with performers Omagbitse Omagbemi, Mulunesh, and Malick Cissé, she creates a ritualistic, apocalyptic, and carnivalesque performance. Constructed identities are questioned, bodies deviate to the point of becoming unbearable and begin to rupture. The dancers express their place in the world through fragmented, disjointed movements while the set collapses around them. In a shaky, faltering world filled with improbable, grotesque, and violent events, the performance evokes memories of early horror films and that eerie sensation—that flicker in the dark.

about Cherish Menzo
Cherish Menzo (1988, Netherlands) is a choreographer and dancer. She lives in Brussels and Amsterdam.
In her work, Cherish primarily explores how the body can transform on stage and how various ideas can be physically "embodied." Through distortion, decay, and dissonance, she seeks to liberate bodies from forced perceptions and their everyday physical reality—emphasizing the complexity and contradiction of images that may initially appear familiar. She has been creating her own work since 2016.
Cherish received the Amsterdam FRINGE Award and the FRINGE International Bursary Award in 2019 with JEZEBEL. In 2020, JEZEBEL was selected for both the Dutch and Flemish Theater Festivals. In 2022, Cherish received the prestigious Charlotte Köhler Prize from the Prins Bernhard Fund (Amsterdam). DARKMATTER was also selected for both the Dutch and Belgian Theater Festivals (2023). With DARKMATTER, Cherish won the BNG Bank Theater Prize (2023) and the Best Direction Award (2023) from the Dutch Theater Jury. Her work is structurally supported and produced by GRIP, where she is part of the artistic core.

Malick Cissé is a powerful and distinctive performer and dancer with immense versatility in movement practices. In his own practice, Malick explores the hybridization of styles such as hip-hop, contemporary dance, krump, and breakdance.
about Mulunesh
Mulunesh trained in dance in Aurillac and later in Toulouse. Her encounter with Anne Marie Van, also known as Nach, introduced her to KRUMP culture. As she explored the KRUMP movement, she met Julien Adjovi, a.k.a. Wrestler. She worked under the name Wrestler X to refine her techniques and vocabulary.
