Joshua Jonker - wereldpremière
Van breakdancer bij Boys Action ontwikkelde Nederlander Joshua Junker zich tot danser bij het Britse Royal Ballet. Hier creëerde hij ook zijn eerste choreografieën. In 2023 debuteerde hij bij de Junior Company met Remembrance, dat meteen werd bekroond met de Aanmoedigingsprijs van Dansersfonds ’79. Net als toen zal Junker ook in zijn nieuwe creatie voor Ballet Beats invloeden uit de hiphop verwerken.

Arielle Smith Jones - wereldpremière
De Cubaanse Arielle Smith Jones (1996) heeft nu al een prestigieuze Olivier Award op haar naam staan. Oorspronkelijk afkomstig uit het moderne-danscircuit mixt ze in haar eigenzinnige creaties vaak dans, theater en film. In Ballet Beats maakt ze met een nieuw werk haar Nederlandse debuut.
Mthuthuzeli November - wereldpremière
Zuid-Afrikaan Mthuthuzeli November tekent voor de derde wereldpremière. Met een achtergrond in zowel Afrikaanse dans als ballet geldt hij als een opvallende nieuwe ‘stem’ binnen de internationale balletwereld. Ook hij sleepte voor een van zijn choreografieën een Olivier Award in de wacht. Sinds vorig jaar is hij Artistic Associate bij de Nationale Balletacademie en eerder al maakte hij een duet voor Nationale Ballet-solisten Anna Tsygankova en Giorgi Potskhishvili.
George Balanchine - Allegro Brillante
Het vierde werk in Ballet Beats, George Balanchines Allegro Brillante, is een Nederlandse première. Het is een van de meest bruisende, lichtvoetige, maar daarom niet minder uitdagende werken van de belangrijkste (neo)klassieke choreograaf van de twintigste eeuw. Zelf zei hij dat “het alles bevat wat ik weet over ballet, maar dan samengevat in dertien minuten”.

Ballet Beats presents world premieres by three breakout choreographers: Joshua Junker (Netherlands), Arielle Smith-Jones (Cuba/UK), and Mthuthuzeli November (South Africa). The programme concludes with the effervescent brilliance of Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante (1956) – a work hailed for its clarity, speed, and musicality, by one of the 20th century’s great ballet innovators.

Joshua Junker (Nijmegen, 1998)
Once a breakdancer with Boys Action, Dutch choreographer Joshua Junker is now a dancer and creator with The Royal Ballet in London. He fuses hip hop influences into the language of classical ballet. In 2023, he debuted with Junior Company with Remembrance, which was immediately awarded the Encouragement Prize from the Dansersfonds ’79. His work bursts with kinetic energy while embracing striking simplicity.
Arielle Smith-Jones (Havana, 1996)
Only 25 and already the recipient of a prestigious Olivier Award, this Cuban-British talent draws from contemporary dance, theatre, and film. She fearlessly reimagines classics like The Nutcracker and Carmen. In 2022, The Guardian named her one of the most exciting choreographic voices to watch. Ballet Beats marks her Dutch debut.
Mthuthuzeli November (Cape Town, 1993)
With roots in both African dance and classical ballet, South African choreographer November brings a distinctive voice to the global ballet scene. Also an Olivier Award winner, he’s currently affiliated with the Dutch National Ballet Academy. He previously created a duet for National Ballet principals Anna Tsygankova and Giorgi Potskhishvili, and now presents a new world premiere for the Junior Company.
George Balanchine (St. Petersburg, 1904 – New York, 1983)
A master of musicality and movement, Balanchine shaped American ballet like no other. Born Georgiy Balanchivadze, he married four ballerinas and turned his muses into living embodiments of his choreographic vision. His Allegro Brillante, now receiving its Dutch premiere, is a radiant distillation of neoclassical brilliance set to Tchaikovsky.
