Animazing: In This Corner of the World (2016)

NL: Japan, jaren 1930-40. Suzu is een zachtaardige jonge vrouw met een talent voor tekenen en dagdromen. Op haar achttiende zegt ze haar kuststadje vlakbij Hiroshima vaarwel om te trouwen met een jonge militaire bediende in de havenstad Kure, zo’n twintig kilometer verderop. Terwijl Suzu zich probeert aan te passen aan het leven weg van haar familie, begint de oorlog steeds duidelijker voelbaar te worden. Langzaam worden luchtalarmen en bombardementen dagelijkse kost en verandert leven in ‘overleven’.

WOII, inclusief “de bom” en het lijden van de Japanners, is geen onbekend thema in anime. Hebben we niet allemaal gejankt bij Ghibli’s aangrijpende klassieker Grave of the Fireflies of de tragische verfilming van Barefoot Gen? Maar weinig films hebben zo gracieus de natuur en de stille veerkracht van Japan zo op de voorgrond geplaatst als In This Corner of the World, een ingetogen, bijna verstild meesterwerkje van Sunao Katabuchi. Katabuchi werkte ooit als assistent bij Hayao Miyazaki, maar zijn vertelstijl sluit meer aan bij die van Ghibli-medeoprichter Isao Takahata. In This Corner of the World toont dat – zelfs te midden van de gruwelijkste taferelen – schoonheid blijft voortbestaan. Ook al schuilt die menselijkheid soms in een klein hoekje.

EN: With a knack for drawing, writing, and daydreaming, Suzu is a kind-hearted, creative young woman growing up in 1930s-40s Japan. At 18, she leaves her seaside hometown near Hiroshima to marry a young military clerk in the naval city of Kure, just 20 or so kilometres away. As Suzu adjusts to life away from her family, the shadow of war begins to loom over the townspeople. Slowly, air raid sirens and bombings become routine, and life shifts into survival.

There have been numerous films about “the bomb” and Japan’s suffering during WWII – Ghibli’s harrowing classic Grave of the Fireflies and the Hiroshima-set Barefoot Gen among them – but few have foregrounded the country’s natural world and its quietly resilient people as powerfully as Sunao Katabuchi’s remarkably understated In This Corner of the World. Though Katabuchi once served as an assistant under Hayao Miyazaki, his storytelling has more in common with Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata. In This Corner of the World is a poignant reminder of the power of the human spirit in the face of war. Even when surrounded by humanity’s darkest acts, beauty still manages to endure in small, quiet corners.
